Western Tanzania wilderness — Gombe, Mahale and Katavi with Yera Journeys

 WESTERN CIRCUIT · YERA JOURNEYS

Gombe. Mahale. Katavi.

Chimpanzee trekking through ancient forest, lakeshore camps on Lake Tanganyika, and one of Africa's most untouched wildernesses — the Tanzania almost no traveler ever sees, and the one you won't forget.

THE PROBLEM

Chimp Trekking Rarely Fits a Standard Itinerary.

Gombe and Mahale sit on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, reachable only by charter flight and boat — no roads connect them to the rest of Tanzania. Most operators simply skip the west rather than manage that logistics chain, leaving travelers to choose between classic game viewing and time with wild chimpanzees.

THE YERA DIFFERENCE

We Handle the Logistics. You Don't Have to Choose.

Charter flights, boat transfers, and permit timing for Gombe and Mahale are arranged around your existing safari — not instead of it. You get the primates and the plains, on the same private-guide standard Yera builds every journey around.

"We sat fifteen feet from a wild chimpanzee grooming her infant in Mahale, then flew back to our safari the next morning as if it were the most natural itinerary in the world. Most operators told us that combination wasn't possible. Yera made it simple." — Helen T. · Australia

THE THREE RESERVES

Three Reserves. A Tanzania Almost No One Sees.

Forest wilderness in Gombe National Park, Tanzania

BEST FOR: CHIMPANZEE TREKKING

Gombe

The forest where Jane Goodall began her research — small, steep, and intimate. Guided treks follow habituated chimpanzee communities through the canopy, in groups kept deliberately small to protect both the primates and the experience.

Lakeshore and forest in Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania

BEST FOR: LAKESHORE & FOREST

Mahale

A remote peninsula on Lake Tanganyika, reached only by boat. Chimpanzee trekking by morning, white-sand lakeshore by afternoon — a combination of wilderness and rest found almost nowhere else in Tanzania.

Untouched wilderness in Katavi National Park, Tanzania

BEST FOR: UNTOUCHED WILDERNESS

Katavi

One of Tanzania's most remote major parks, and one of its wildest. In the dry season, hippos and crocodiles crowd into shrinking floodplain pools in numbers rarely seen elsewhere — witnessed by a fraction of the visitors of any northern park.

QUESTIONS

Western Circuit — Frequently Asked

How do we physically get to Gombe and Mahale?

By charter flight followed by boat. There's a light-aircraft connection from Arusha or Dar es Salaam to Kigoma, then a boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika to your camp — no roads reach either park, which is exactly what keeps them this quiet.

Is chimpanzee trekking physically demanding?

It can be. Gombe and Mahale are steep, forested, and the chimps move on their own schedule, so treks range from an easy hour to several hours over uneven terrain. Tell us your fitness level and we'll set expectations and pacing accordingly.

Should we combine this with another circuit?

Almost everyone does. The Western Circuit's charter-and-boat logistics make the most sense as an extension to a Northern or Southern Circuit safari, rather than a standalone trip — we'll build the connection around whichever you choose.
