Zanzibar's East Coast is beautiful, but the tide pulls the ocean out twice a day, sometimes for hours. The North Coast doesn't have that problem. Nungwi and Kendwa sit at the island's northern tip, where deep water stays close to shore at any hour, and the coastline faces west — sunsets, not sunrises, define the evening here. It's also Zanzibar's most developed stretch, with the island's strongest dining scene, though Yera keeps well clear of Kendwa's louder party strip further south.
TWO BEACHES, ONE COAST
Zanzibar's most developed beach hub, and its most storied — dhow-building has continued on this stretch for generations, with wooden hulls still shaped by hand on the sand. Restaurants and beach bars cluster along the shore more densely than anywhere else on the island, and the peninsula's westward curve gives Nungwi some of Zanzibar's most reliable sunset views.
A few kilometers south of Nungwi, Kendwa trades density for space — a wide, open beach with room to breathe, and a run of quieter luxury resorts along its northern stretch. Kendwa is best known outside Zanzibar for its monthly full moon party, held further along the beach — the properties Yera recommends sit well clear of it, keeping the calm without the noise.
WHAT TO DO
A traditional wooden dhow sails out from the beach as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean — Nungwi's westward-facing coastline makes this one of the best sunset vantage points on the island.
Boats depart daily for Mnemba Atoll and the surrounding reef, among the best snorkeling and diving in East Africa — turtles, reef fish, and clear water year-round.
Unlike Zanzibar's East Coast, the North Coast holds its depth through the tide cycle — no need to plan a swim around the tide table.
Nungwi's dining scene is the strongest on the island — seafood grills, beach bars, and restaurants set directly on the sand, many built around the sunset itself.
North Coast resort properties carry some of Zanzibar's best spa and wellness offerings — treatments set steps from the beach, bookable as a half-day addition to any stay.
