Tarangire takes its name from the Tarangire River, the park's lifeline and the reason it exists as a wildlife stronghold at all. During the dry season (roughly June to October), as seasonal water sources across the region disappear, wildlife concentrates along the river in some of the highest densities in Tanzania — Tarangire is best known for its elephant populations, but also draws large numbers of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe to the same stretch of water. The landscape itself is distinctive: rolling savannah dotted with ancient baobab trees, some believed to be well over a thousand years old, alongside termite mounds that rise several meters from the grassland. Tarangire also holds one of the highest bird counts of any park in Tanzania, with over 550 species recorded — a serious draw for birdwatchers even outside peak game-viewing season.
