Ancient baobab at dusk — Southern Circuit Safari Tanzania with Yera Journeys

 SOUTHERN CIRCUIT · YERA JOURNEYS

Nyerere. Ruaha. Mikumi.

Tanzania's remote south — vast reserves few travelers ever reach, where a single vehicle can watch a sighting alone for an hour. No convoys, no shared game drives, no queue at the crossing. Just wilderness, and a guide who knows it.

★★★★★ 5-STAR RATED EST. 2004 500+ TRAVELERS GUIDED

THE PROBLEM

The Northern Circuit Made Tanzania Famous. It Also Made It Crowded.

Serengeti and Ngorongoro remain extraordinary — but they are no longer quiet. More travelers means more vehicles at every sighting, more camps competing for the same view, and a safari that can start to feel like a shared itinerary rather than your own. A growing number of our travelers now ask for something else: the same caliber of wildlife, without the company.

THE YERA DIFFERENCE

The South Was Never Crowded to Begin With.

Nyerere, Ruaha, and Mikumi are remote by design — reached by charter flight, not highway, and visited by a fraction of the travelers who pass through the north. You get the same private-guide standard Yera builds every safari around: a private vehicle, a senior guide, and a route planned for what's happening on your exact dates — just in reserves where you'll rarely see another vehicle at all.

"We didn't see another vehicle for two days in Nyerere. Just us, the river, and a guide who seemed to know exactly where every animal on that boat safari was going to be before it moved. It felt like having the whole reserve to ourselves." — Daniel R. · Canada

THE THREE RESERVES

Three Reserves. One Uncrowded Tanzania.

Nyerere National Park, Tanzania

BEST FOR: BOAT SAFARIS & PREDATORS

Nyerere

Africa's largest protected wilderness, threaded by the Rufiji River. Boat safaris past hippos and crocodiles, walking trails through miombo woodland, and one of the last strongholds of the African wild dog — all with almost no other vehicles in sight.

Elephants and baobabs in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

BEST FOR: ELEPHANTS & BAOBABS

Ruaha

Tanzania's largest national park, and one of its least visited. Ancient baobabs dominate the horizon, the Great Ruaha River anchors the dry season, and some of the largest lion prides left in Africa hunt its banks.

Mikumi National Park, Tanzania

BEST FOR: EASY ACCESS & BIG SKIES

Mikumi

Tanzania's most accessible southern park — a paved road from Dar es Salaam instead of a charter flight. Open floodplains beneath the Uluguru Mountains give it a Serengeti-like feel, at a fraction of the distance and the crowd.

QUESTIONS

Southern Circuit — Frequently Asked

Is the Southern Circuit right for a first-time safari?

It can be — but most first-time travelers come to us for the Northern Circuit's density of wildlife, then return for the south once they know what they're looking for. If solitude and remoteness matter to you more than ticking off the most famous names, the south works beautifully as a first safari too.

How do travelers actually get there?

By charter flight. Nyerere and Ruaha are reached by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam — usually under an hour in the air — rather than a long road transfer. Mikumi is the exception: it's accessible by paved road directly from Dar es Salaam.

How does it compare to the Serengeti for game viewing?

Different, not lesser. You won't see the migration's sheer numbers, but Ruaha holds some of the largest lion prides left in Africa, and Nyerere offers boat and walking safaris the Serengeti doesn't. What you gain is density of experience without density of vehicles — most sightings in the south are yours alone.
