Stone Town is Zanzibar's historic heart — a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and still a living, breathing city rather than a museum piece. Narrow coral-stone alleys, ornately carved wooden doors, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influence sit layered on top of one another, block by block. Most travelers experience Stone Town as a half-day or full-day cultural add-on — paired naturally with a beach stay on Zanzibar's coast, or as a first or last stop on a mainland safari.
WHAT YOU'LL SEE
Zanzibar's oldest surviving structure, built by Omani Arabs in the late 17th century over the ruins of a Portuguese chapel. Its amphitheater now hosts concerts and festivals inside centuries-old coral-stone walls.
Once the tallest building in East Africa and the first in Zanzibar wired for electricity, this former ceremonial palace remains one of Stone Town's most recognizable landmarks.
As the sun sets, this waterfront park becomes an open-air food market — grilled seafood, Zanzibar pizza, and sugarcane juice, eaten shoulder-to-shoulder with locals.
Hundreds of ornately carved doors survive across Stone Town, each a signature of Swahili, Arab, or Indian craftsmanship — brass studs, geometric patterns, and inscriptions marking the house behind them.
Stone Town's working spice and produce market, functioning much as it has for generations — cloves, cardamom, fresh fish, and fabric stalls in close quarters.
Stone Town was once East Africa's largest slave-trading port. The site now holds an Anglican cathedral and a memorial to those who suffered here — a sobering, necessary stop, presented with the historical weight it deserves.
