Saadani National Park, on Tanzania's mainland coast between Dar es Salaam and Tanga, is the country's only national park that runs down to the Indian Ocean. Elephants, giraffes and buffalo live a short drive from the sand, and boat safaris on the Wami River pass hippos and crocodiles. In the morning you watch giraffes and elephants from an open vehicle. By lunch you are in the ocean. Saadani is the one place in Tanzania where a game drive and a swim happen on the same stretch of coast, with no flight in between.
In the afternoon a boat takes you up the Wami River, past hippos, crocodiles and mangroves full of birds. Further north in Pangani, dhows still sail at dawn, old Swahili houses line the river, and the beaches are long, palm-lined and almost empty.
This is Tanzania's least-crowded coastline: no big resorts, few other guests and a slow, real Swahili rhythm. We put it together so the journey feels easy, and the wild coast feels entirely yours.

Where is Saadani National Park?
On Tanzania's mainland coast, between Dar es Salaam and Tanga and opposite Zanzibar. It is the only national park in Tanzania that reaches the Indian Ocean.
What animals can you see in Saadani?
Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, warthogs, waterbuck and other antelope, plus many birds. Lions and leopards live here but are seen less often than in the big safari parks.
How do you get to Saadani and Pangani?
By light aircraft from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, or by road from Dar es Salaam or from Arusha and Moshi in the north. We arrange every transfer.
Is Saadani worth it compared with the Serengeti?
Saadani is not a replacement for the Serengeti. It is a gentler safari with fewer animals, but you get wildlife and the beach in one place, with almost no other visitors. It is best as a relaxed add-on.
When is the best time to visit Saadani and Pangani?
June to October and December to February. The long rains from March to May make some roads difficult and some lodges close.
What is Maziwe Island?
A sandbank in a marine reserve off the Pangani coast. You reach it by dhow at low tide to swim and snorkel among reef fish.
How many days should I spend there?
Four to six nights: two or three in Saadani for safari, and two to four on the Pangani beaches.
