What is the Ngorongoro Crater?
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest unflooded and unbroken volcanic caldera, about 260 km² of grassland, forest, swamp and soda lake surrounded by walls around 600 metres high. It lies in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Tanzania, between Arusha and the Serengeti. The crater floor is one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five in one day, including the rare black rhino, and since 2025 the conservation area is also home to a small population of southern white rhinos. Why is the Ngorongoro Crater famous?
It is the world's largest unflooded and unbroken volcanic caldera, with a huge concentration of wildlife on its floor, including the Big Five and black rhino.
Can you see the Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater?
Yes. It is one of the best places in Africa to see all five in one day, and the most reliable place in Tanzania for black rhino. Leopards are seen less often than the others.
Are there white rhinos in Ngorongoro?
Yes. In 2025, 18 southern white rhinos were moved from South Africa to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to build a new population. They are still settling in, so sightings are not guaranteed. The black rhino remains the one you are most likely to see.
How much time do you need in the Ngorongoro Crater?
One full or half-day game drive on the crater floor. Stay two to four nights to add Ndutu, Olduvai Gorge or the Empakaai crater walk.
When is the best time to visit the Ngorongoro Crater?
All year, because the wildlife stays in the crater. June to October is dry with clear views; December to March is green, with calving in nearby Ndutu.
Can you stay inside the Ngorongoro Crater?
No. There are no lodges on the crater floor. You stay on the crater rim or in Karatu and drive down for your game drive.
Is it cold at Ngorongoro?
Yes, the crater rim is over 2,000 metres high, so mornings and evenings are cool all year. Bring warm layers.
Should I visit Ngorongoro or the Serengeti?
Both, if you can. Ngorongoro gives you the Big Five in one day; the Serengeti gives you the Great Migration and endless plains. They sit next to each other.
