What is the Serengeti?
Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's oldest and most famous national park, covering about 14,750 km² of grassland, kopjes and river woodland in the north of the country. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the Great Migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, as well as some of Africa's highest numbers of lions, cheetahs and leopards. When is the best time to visit the Serengeti?
All year, but June to October is best for dry-season game viewing and Mara River crossings, and December to March for calving season in the south.
How many days do you need in the Serengeti?
Three to five nights in the park. Add the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire for a six to eight day safari.
How do you get to the Serengeti?
By road from Arusha via the Ngorongoro Crater, which takes most of a day, or by a short flight from Arusha or Zanzibar to an airstrip inside the park.
Can you see the Big Five in the Serengeti?
You can see lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo. Rhinos are rare in the Serengeti, so most guests add the Ngorongoro Crater for the best chance of all five.
Where is the Great Migration in the Serengeti?
In the south and Ndutu from December to March, the centre and west from April to June, and the north from July to October.
What does Serengeti mean?
It comes from the Maasai word for "endless plains".
Is the Serengeti better than the Maasai Mara?
The Serengeti is much larger, hosts the migration for most of the year and has fewer vehicles in many areas. The Maasai Mara in Kenya is smaller and hosts the herds for part of the dry season.
