The Great Migration — Witness the Crossing at Its Peak

Touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your personal guide is waiting beyond arrivals — no shared shuttles, no queues. The drive to Arusha takes you through coffee plantations and Maasai settlements as the light softens over Mount Meru. Serena Mountain Village sits on the forested slopes above the town, a quiet first night to settle in before the safari begins in earnest tomorrow. No activities scheduled today — this is a day for arrival, rest, and a proper night's sleep before Tarangire.

Depart Arusha after breakfast for Tarangire National Park, famed for its elephant concentrations and ancient baobabs that rise like sentinels over the savannah. Spend the morning and early afternoon on game drives along the Tarangire River, where dry-season herds gather in numbers rarely matched elsewhere in Tanzania. In the late afternoon, continue west toward Karatu and the Ngorongoro Highlands, arriving at Ngorongoro Coffee Lodge as the light fades over the working coffee estate. Note: this is a fuller driving day, balanced by an extended game drive in Tarangire — your guide will pace the day so it never feels rushed.

An early departure takes you down the crater wall as the morning mist lifts off the caldera floor. Inside, the Ngorongoro Crater holds an estimated 25,000 large mammals within its 260 square kilometres — lion, elephant, hippo, and one of the last strongholds of black rhino in East Africa. Spend the full morning tracing the crater floor before ascending back to the rim for lunch, with the afternoon at leisure at the lodge, overlooking the coffee estate.

Leave the highlands behind and cross the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with a stop at Olduvai Gorge — the "Cradle of Mankind" — where some of the earliest hominid fossils were discovered. Continue past the Shifting Sands, a wandering volcanic dune sacred to the Maasai, before descending onto the short-grass plains of the Serengeti. Arrive at Four Seasons Safari Lodge in the Central Serengeti in time for lunch, with an afternoon game drive through Seronera's rivers and kopjes — prime territory for resident lion prides and leopard.

With the crossing still days ahead in the north, today is given entirely to the Central Serengeti's year-round resident wildlife. Morning and afternoon game drives trace the Seronera Valley and its river systems, where leopard sightings are among the most reliable in Tanzania and lion prides hold territory along the kopjes. Return each time to Four Seasons, where the infinity pool overlooks a private waterhole — an afternoon at leisure is yours to take, whenever you'd like one.

Depart Central Serengeti after breakfast for the long push north, tracking the migration's movement as the plains give way to the riverine woodlands of the Mara region. This is a game drive in its own right, not a transfer between them — expect stops for wildlife along the way, with your guide reading the terrain for where the herds are gathering. Arrive at Lemala Mara Camp by late afternoon, deep in the heart of Northern Serengeti's migration corridor.

Before sunrise, lift off in a hot air balloon over the Serengeti plains, drifting silently above herds that stretch to the horizon, followed by a champagne breakfast on landing. The remainder of the day is dedicated to the Mara River, where your guide positions for the crossing — reading herd behaviour, river conditions, and the tension that builds before thousands of wildebeest commit to the water. This is peak migration season, and the crossing is the reason the world comes to the Mara.

A last early-morning game drive through the Mara before transferring to the local airstrip for your scheduled flight to Arusha, connecting on to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your international departure.
